The Story of Stromberg: From 1894 Chicago to Modern Bluetooth Speakers

Stromberg is not a startup that appeared out of nowhere. The brand goes back to 1894, when two Swedish immigrants founded Stromberg-Carlson in Chicago.

The founding: Chicago, 1894

Alfred Stromberg and Androv Carlson each invested $500 to start a telephone equipment company. Alexander Graham Bell's patent had just expired, and independent phone companies needed reliable hardware. Stromberg-Carlson delivered exactly that.

Alfred ran the business side. Androv managed manufacturing. Together they built a reputation on two things: equipment that worked and prices that were fair.

Growth and evolution

Over the next century, Stromberg-Carlson expanded far beyond telephones:

  • Military communications systems during wartime
  • Institutional sound systems for schools, businesses, and public spaces
  • Radio and television receivers in American homes
  • PBX telephone systems — including the first fully digital system in 1977

The company moved from Chicago to Rochester, New York in 1904. It was acquired by General Dynamics in 1955, and the brand went through several ownership transitions before Gularo S.A. acquired it in 2001.

Stromberg today

Today Stromberg makes portable Bluetooth speakers. The product changed completely, but the founding principles have not: real performance, honest specs, intentional design, and fair prices.

The lineup covers everything from the pocket-sized Pop (8W, $29.99) to the party-ready Mega Force (80W, $199.99). Every speaker is tested with RMS watt ratings and real-world battery measurements — no inflated marketing numbers.

What makes Stromberg different

  • 130+ years of audio heritage — not a brand that appeared last year
  • Real specs: RMS watts, tested battery life, actual IPX ratings
  • Design-forward: bold colors, textures, and forms that stand out
  • Accessible pricing: $29.99 to $199.99 with free shipping
  • Manufacturing relationships: 60+ year partnerships with factory partners

Stromberg speakers are available at stromberg.store, Amazon, TikTok Shop, and Walmart.com. All orders ship free across the United States.
